Be a part of the Aquatics staff team

Richmond Aquatic Services is part of the City of Richmond's Community Services Division. Our lifeguard/instructors have the opportunity to work at one of four aquatic facilities - indoors at Minoru Centre for Active Living and Watermania and outdoors at South Arm and Steveston Outdoor Pools. Over 100 lifeguards are employed with typically more during the summer months.

Instructor/Lifeguard Subsidy Program - Apply today!

This program provides subsidized training courses to youth and adult residents (13+ years) who are experiencing financial hardship, and who are interested in a career or position as an Instructor/Lifeguard. The City subsidizes eligible Richmond applicants up to 90% of the total course fees.

Required training and qualifications:

Aquatic Attendant

  • Bronze Medallion
  • Bronze Cross (current within two year)
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C with AED (current within three years)
  • Current enrollment in or completion of Grade 10
  • 15+ years of age

Swimming Instructor

  • Lifesaving Society Swimming Instructor (current within two years)
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C with AED (current within three years)
  • Current enrollment in or completion of Grade 10
  • 15+ years of age

Instructor/Lifeguard*

  • Bronze Medallion
  • Bronze Cross
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C with AED (current within three years)
  • National Lifeguard Pool (current within two years)
  • National Lifeguard Waterpark (current within two years)
  • Lifesaving Society Swimming Instructor (current within two years)
  • 16+ years of age

*To start as an Instructor/Lifeguard 1 versus an Auxiliary Junior Instructor/Lifeguard, the following is also required:

  • Lifesaving Instructor (current within three years)
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • 500 hours of Instructor/Lifeguard work experience
